About This Project
Project Size: 2 x 50 MWe (expandable by an additional 100 MWe)
Reykjavík Geothermal, in partnership with DISA, a leading energy company in the Canary Islands, is developing two major geothermal projects on the island of Tenerife. This joint venture aims to harness local geothermal resources to significantly reduce the island’s dependence on oil for its base load power generation.
The project has already secured geothermal licenses covering an area of approximately 145 km², with plans to commence drilling operations in 2025. The European Union has granted €43 million in funding to support these critical drilling activities.
The collaboration between Reykjavík Geothermal and DISA aims to address the urgent energy challenges faced by the Canary Islands, where over 85% of electricity is currently generated from imported fossil fuels, contributing significantly to carbon emissions. The successful implementation of these geothermal projects could serve as a sustainable, long-term solution for cleaner and more reliable energy in the region.
