Atlantica Investment Firm acquires Coso geothermal plants in California

by | Feb 20, 2021

Reykjavík Geothermal acted the role of Lead Technical Advisor for a company known as Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure, on the acquisition of the Coso Geothermal Power Holding in Inyo County, California.

The Coso Geothermal Plant was put into operation in the early eighties with a capacity of 270 MWe. Today, the plant is currently operating at about 160 MWe and consisting of 8 turbines. Reykjavík Geothermal performed a detailed assessment of the operations, equipment, and the geothermal resource, as well as an assessment for the optimization potential of the plant going forward. Atlantica sent in a bid in the end of 2020 with their bid being accepted in early 2021.

As the third largest geothermal power plant in the United States, Coso plays a critical role in supporting California’s decarbonization efforts. The asset provides base-load, non-intermittent, renewable energy to the California ISO. Reykjavík Geothermal wants to congratulate Atlantica on the successful acquisition and their entry into geothermal energy.
